"If you put all your time and all your efforts to become a master, in an art like chess you sacrifice, but the question is what is it that you sacrifice, and the next question is of course "Is it worth it?"

...if it brings you joy....yes It's definitely worth it

if you can maintain sanity, if you can fend for yourself, put food on the table, pay bills, pay loans, pay for a bus pass, and still do what you love to do, then yes.

But what if we do decide that we want more out of it. We want to see ourselves excel faster, and beleving that in order to do so, we must concentrate ourselves, by situating ourselves only around things that are relative to our goal.

If i'm not mistaken, we all have (more or less) 24 hours in a day no? Okay Let's say you take two people, both who share a passion for say..Illustration..or drawing! Let's say Both find joy in drawing, and let's say both of them see hope in trying to make a living with this passion of theirs. But let's say both go about their owns ways in their attempt to reach their higher levels of skills. Both are bound to duties, both must work within a system. What if one decides to say forget working with the system, forget those other duties, I don't want to follow the same schedule that everyone else has, I want to create my own. I just want to draw.I want to put all my energy into developing this skill for drawing, while the other person moves at a snails pace, balancing their day with a 9-5 job to consistentlty pay the bills, eat healthy, not be stressed so much about how to get from point a to point b because they have money for the bus.

If you were to give both of these people a test to see who would achieve a greater skill within say 10 years who do you think would be more skillful in drawing? Who would you hire if you wanted to give them a job? What if I were to say that the one who spent all their time developing their skills in drawing, was lacking in another area..let's say he or she forgot how to socialize well with people, didn't know how to take care of himself or herself, was a little sick in the head because he or she had very little people to talk to other than himself or herself and his or her pencils and pens, and let's say he or she was applauded, encouraged and praised by people who found his or her crazy persona entertaining.

It goes back to the saying about the eggs and the baskets. Don't put it all in one basket, because in case one eggshell cracks, you still have a more than a half of a carton left to boil and fry for the whole family.

I'm sure it brought Bobby joy, but more so as a child. I believe what they were trying to say is that When you reach pinnacle success,the level of 'worlds best' theres no where else to go but down, unless of course you know how to maintain yourself in that position, but it definitely gets more difficult with age. We all have the same human capacity unless we have some kind of brain redardation do we not? If we are passionate about a skill, should we not aim as high as we possibly can? Historically the people who I have seen as great, were often deemed as insane by many people. However the grass is always greener on the other side as they say, perhaps it's not worth living outside of the world for? Perhaps marjolaine summed it up..If it brings you no joy, it's not worth pursuing?

there are some days I want to pat myself on the wings and say thanks for feeding my soul, thanks for helping me find this brush, this pen, this paper, this brilliant idea, thanks for this beautiful creation that I can share with the world...and then... there are those days when I say, you still haven't figured out how to pay this months rent? and what will you do about the dentist,freelance art doesn't come with benefits, or E.I, and what about next months bus pass, you still have to pay off your student loans, and you barely have time to help your mother out because you aint making enough, because your out to trying to rule the world with your art.but you're no where near that level, and the only way to do it is to do it more, and more, and more! at what expense are you willing to excel in your field(s) of art? art art art thats all you do, thats all you think about, thanks all you care about..Its taking over your life.. cut your hair, you have a job interview with wal mart this friday. Say Cheese, you could be the next wal mart portrait photographer.

The question is what is it that we sacrifice? and the next question is Is it worth it?

Right now getting a nine to five job seems more like a sacrifice then losing one. Atleast that's how I saw it before? (when I had one) Ha!

Too much time in one space will drive a person crazy.

There was a time when our talents
were sought after by emperors and kings
who brought us into their palaces
to paint dance and sing
Worshiped like Gods
for the gifts we possessed
seated amongst the elite
treated with the utmost respect
Now fast forward to 2010
where most of those who choose to
paint dance and sing for a living
can barely pay rent
Times have changed
the game is cuthroat
we're seen as the lowest of lows
our lifestyles considered a joke?
if you ask us
the value of an artist is going bankrupt
wounded from the tax cuts
forced to reconsider the bitter back up plan
tougher is the task at hand
we are moving longer passed the days
of living solely off of grants
success rests in the bank
of those who are most wealthy
It's a difficult dream to chase indeed
but see you don't gotta tell we!
I know this life of an artist is hard
but struggling is all part of the job
going up against tremendous odds
in a system mostly ruled by laws
where shooting for the stars
means being far from what's conventional
embarking on this mysterious journey
hell, we'll never know
if the path we chose will work out
before doubt forces us to fold
oh so difficult
its tempting to let go
when life moves so slow
and you've got no dough.
oh believe me I know
this is not your typical profession
it is depressing to think that the pathway to success
is littered with rejection
hence the stress that infects my heart when
the studio where I paint my blood with
feels more like a coffin
wrongly perceived like the Basquiats and Pollocks
when most public eyes only seems to see the final product
A gift and a curse it hurts to go through the process
of answering gods spiritual calling
especially in a time when
we're being charged dollars per minutes
tapping into a higher consciousness
just doesn't seem realistic
it all comes down to business
and what you're willing to risk
Whose ready to put their chips down on the drawing board
and become a prisonor of debt?
some say we're crazy
for willing to play our bets
down on this slow road
knowing that the only thing that is certain
is what we don't know
untill our time is out we trek stubbornly
down the route of creativity
sacrificing the typical picture perfect lifestyle
sprinkled with security and stability
bearing the burden of the unpaid bills
to keep these skills steady in motion
like a pottery wheel
holding onto the hope that our talents
will someday be recognized
to the highest degree
where we wont need that crummy side job just to get by
catch us on the corners busking hustling
playing heartbeats on eardrums for nickels and dimes
tapping on heavenly floors like gregory hines
from private to public galleries
creating masterpiece after masterpiece
living off of love
while slowly dying from the low salaries,
getting complaints
from straightedged heads who complain like
"well that ain't no way to raise a family!"

writing over wrongs

The other day, when I shook hands with a gentleman by the name of John Buhler, I didn't realize it was the same John Buhler that donated 4 million dollars to the University of Winnipeg. He loved the painting I did for Michaelle Jean so much, that he wanted me to paint portraits for his whole family. I only hope he was being honest, because I would really love the extra work right now. I'll put my all into it! I need to start carrying my business cards with me more often. more importantly I need money for my phone. Oh, the beautiful struggles of being an artist...

Michelle Jean will be visitng the Graffiti Gallery this Wednesday for lunch and a couple of words as it is near the end of her 10 year term? as Canada's Governor General. Following the luncheon, the people will proceed to Winnipeg's Northend where the city will be naming a park in her honour. I was asked to do a painting and give it to her as a gift. I am very delighted to be given the opportunity. I wonder if she takes jokes well. If she's a good sport then she will still shake my hand and smile after I tell her that the painting is worth 5 thousand dollars, and that I accept visa...Actually It's not a joke. I'm going to milk her for all that she's worth. Just Joking, but not really.

Happiness is a terrible thing to waste once you've found yourself."

"To live in one world alone is very hard. How do we know what light is, if we don't know about the dark? never say never. I continuously find happiness after suffering, and sometimes I think its necessary to live in both worlds, atleast to d...iscover which world we desire to be in more. Although I do question myself..Is it false to think that you will always need the opposition in order to know your rightful place?. I would like to think of oneness as being a continous beautiful struggle. Perhaps if I was confined far away in some remote sanctuary, away from the filth that surrounds me everyday in this city, It would be easier to live in just one world, but that's not the environment i'm surrounded by. I have also found the righteous path to be a lonely path. Practicing walking meditations by myself while others were driving to bars and liquor marts. It’s been a long and lonely trip but I’m glad that I took it because it was well worth it.
I got to read a couple books and do some research before I reached my verdict.
Never thought that I was perfect. Always thought that I had a purpose.
Used to wonder if I’d live to see my first kiss.

The most difficult thing I ever did was recite my own words at a service
realizing the person I was addressing probably wasn’t looking down from heaven.
Or cooking up something in hell’s kitchen, trying to listen in or eaves drop from some another dimension.
It was self serving just like this is.

Conveniently religious on Easter Sunday and on Christmas.
The television went from being a babysitter to a mistress.
Technology made it easy for us to stay in touch while keeping a distance,
’til we just stayed distant and never touched. Now all we do is text too much.

I don’t remember much from my youth. Maybe my memory is repressed.
Or I just spent too much time wondering if I’d live to have sex.
Fell in love for the first time in 4th grade but I didn’t have the courage to talk to her.
In 8th grade I wrote her the note but I slipped it in someone else’s locker.

Considered killing myself ’cause of that.
It was a big deal. It was a blown cover.
It was over for me. My goose was cooked.
Stick a fork in me. The jig is up.
I blew my chances, the rest is history, our future was torn asunder.
It became abundantly clear that I was only brought here to suffer.

At least I didn’t include my name.
Thankfully I wrote the whole note in code
and it had 10 layers of scotch tape safety seal making it impossible to open.
Plus, it was set to self destruct.
Whoever read it probably died…laughing.
I wonder if they lived long enough to realize what happened.

A year later, I came to understand that wasn’t love that I was feeling for her.
I had someone else to obsess over.
I was older. I was very mature.
I forged my time signature while practicing my parents autograph ’cause I was failing math.
Disconnected the phone when I thought the teacher would call my home.

I checked the mailbox twice a day at the end of a long dirt road.
Steamed open a couple envelopes like I was in private detective mode.
If you snoop around long enough for something in particular you’re guaranteed to find it.
For better or worse that’s how I learned that it’s best to just keep some things private.

It was the best of times. It was the end of times.

I was always on deck, I was next in line.
An only child with a pen and pad writing a list of things that I could never have.
The walls in my house were paper thin.
Every squabble seemed to get deafening.
If my memory serves me correctly I made it a point to void and forget some things.

Kept my secrets…hid my talents…
in my head, never under the mattress.

Therapy couldn’t break me.
Never learned a word that would insure safety.

The door to my room was like a big old coffin.
The way that it creeked when I closed it shut.
Anxieties peaked when it opened up.
As if everything that I was thinking would be exposed.
I still sleep fully clothed.

It was the best of times. It was the end of times.

It was beautiful.
It was brutal.
It was cruel.
It was business as usual.

Heaven. It was hell.
Used to wonder if I’d live to see 12.

When I did I figured that I was immortal.
Loved to dance but couldn’t make it to the formal.
Couldn’t bear watching my imaginary girlfriend
bust a move with any other dudes.

Tone Loc was talking bout a “Wild Thang”
but I was still caught up in some child thangs.
Scared of a God who couldn’t spare the rod.
It was clearly a brimstone and fire thang.

Pyromaniac. Kleptomaniac.
Couldn’t explain my desire to steal that fire.
Now I add it to my rider.
Like “Please oh please don’t throw me in that patch of brier!”

It was the best of times. It was the end of times.

The school counselor was clueless ’cause I never skipped classes.
Perfect attendance. Imperfect accent.
Speech impediment they could never really fix
and I faked bad eyesight so I could wear glasses.

Considered doing something that would cripple me.
I wanted a wheelchair. I wanted the sympathy.
I wanted straight teeth so then came braces.
4 years of head gear helped me change faces.

It was the best of times. It was the end of times.

Now I wonder if I’ll live to see marriage.
Wonder if I’ll live long enough to have kids.
Wonder if I’ll live to see my kids have kids.
If I do I’m gonna tell ‘em how it is.

After another night of standing around, drinking, conversing about this and that,inside I couldn't help but feel bored, and unamused. Following the pack has never really made me feel fulfilled. Drinking your face off, poisoning your body, acting stupid, I suppose is fun when you're lost in that moment, that crowd, that 'way' of doing things, but when you're conscious of what you're doing, alive and awake, and fully aware of what your purpose is, of where your strength really lies, and what powers you possess, you want to celebrate it in another way. Perhaps I needed to be in a setting that I never wanted to be in the first place, in order to realize where I did want to be. I should have gone home, instead I chose to celebrate my life making art. 430 am Drawing on the downtown sidewalk, watching the sunrise was amazing to me . So many people showed me love for my work. I love my life an artist. It's a struggle, but its worth the struggle.

The Shift

You have been Gifted with the experience of a Divine Moment. Never before in the history of your world has there been a time of Transformation such as this. All creation is engulfed in the Momentum of Change. You are experiencing the wonders of a New World of perception. With the help of the energies that flood your world you have the chance to accelerate a process that might have taken centuries.

Now you are able to embody the higher states of Beingness while retaining physical form. This is the experience known as Ascension. Ascension is not an event but rather a Momentum. The differing perceptions of another do not invalidate your own, they merely add the richness of contrast to the comforted Vision That Is Oneness. If all were whistling the same note there would be no music. Harmony is dependent upon a recognition of differences and a willingness to hold to one's own Truth intact in Its Presence. Once you are able to look at another Being and see no difference at all there is no need for Harmony. For here there is only Oneness ... this is the place the story began and this is the end toward which all Consciousness strives to return.

Compassion is the common thread with which the tapestry of each of your lives are interwoven for in Truth there is only One of Us here. The present Moment's clarity does not invalidate the journey that was necessary in order to attain it. The Higher Awareness and the Divine connectedness you begin to sense is no more and no less than your own Self. It is You as Is the One who speaks with you NOW. The God you would hold exalted and worship from afar is no further away than your own Heart.

There is nothing foreign or other-worldly about experiencing your connectedness with God for it is none other than your very own Divine essence ever present within you that reaches out in that embrace. It is not something that suddenly enters, it is something that has never left.

This past tuesday, Winnipeg Poetry Slam hosted the final competition of the season to determine who will be going to Ottawa to represent at the 2010 Canadian Festival of Spoken Word. I was asked to feature at this event. The crowd was great, the lighting set the mood very well, and the wheelchair gave me back some super powers that I thought I had lost forever. It was a great night.The Winnipeg Spoken Word Artists inspire me. They brought me back to my feet. I am thankful to be a part of a community that supports and honours freedom of speech, creativty, individual expression, and diversity.

What a jam what a jam. I don't think there will be another opportunity to break, emcee, and have my art on display all at in the same venue, well atleast not for a while. What a beautiful life. I'm taking advantage of it until it comes down. Speaking of which, the gallery has decided to extend my exhibit untill August 27 at which time the Governor General of Canada will come visit the graffiti gallery.

Coloring outside the box

Jazzy Jester of the Albino Rhinos crew came to Wininpeg to share his philosophy on dance and hip hop. He did a workshop that involved alot of coloring outside the box, which I found very liberating. He promotes invidual creativity, and the confidence to be who you truly are, while still having that balance between whats outside and whats in. Know both, but use whats inside the box, to know what you want to do outside. What else did we learn....FALLING! learning how to fall..with style. WATER moving like it. Movement vs. moves. No one can move like you, people can imitate moves, but they cannot be you. what else..as soon as you begin to define what hip hop is, you are boxing yourself in, don't fall victim to that. Go for self, and do what feels natural. Flying Bears, angry snakes, majestics ASSteroids, and shoulder brushing handshakes.

You know that feeling you get after you've had some drinks but can't remember how many you've had and your stomach turns and turns and you can barely walk straight, and you come home 10 hours passed your bedtime, you puke everywhere, you get a phone call from your friend reminding you that you have to perform a dance for some business people downtown, you have to do alot of movement, you have to spin on your back, roll around on the cement, but on the way there you make a stop at some back alley to puke some more, and all the colors of the rainbow that you mixed into your drinks from the previous night come spewing out on the floor and you feel somehwat releived but not entirely because you know the feeling wont go away right away... yea yea that feeling... fuck that feeling. no more poison please.

Two of a Kind

So the show was a success. Many people came through, alot of support was shown, many of the pieces were sold, some that I now regret selling. I'm happy that the artwork made people feel happy, and happier to know that it inspired alot of people to go home and make art. That is quite the reward. In the end I was happy, although I am still not satisfied with the outcome, and I think that it's a good thing. I enviosion something bigger, something wilder, something a little more fun, with a live performance, live painting and dance. And A book launch, and a cd launch. I will make this happen. Stay tuned.

Generosity can be good fortune

I received this as a gift in return of a small favour. The lesson learned from this is to always be good to good people. Good things will be returned. The key is not to expect anything in return.

Monday night Raw

Last Monday the Powerful Pharoahe came to the Pyramid. He was what I expected...REAL. Human but so Godlike. So much soul in him, I was with him from start to finish on his set. I feel that he should have been highlighting the show instead of Slaughterhouse. on the contrar, it makes sense to have him go before hand, its primetime, plus, you get to go home early. (jokes) Slaughterhouse is nice, but it just aint for me. They were complaining about the mics and giving that Harry Potter soundman guy a hard time. Not once through Pharoahs set did it seem like a problem. When he did Simon Says of course the play errupts, its like the one track that everybody knows. But everything else, from the Soundbombing tracks to shit off of interntal affairs to bits from O.K days to the newer Desire shit..sweet lordie lord, I was on it. I caught capital Ph ar oa he pharaohe standing in the back by himself after his set. We shook hands and bowed heads. I extended my respects and that was that. Truly and Honour. Pharoahe is superhuman to me and that was special night. The rest of the hip hop that night was ...no comments

According to the 08/09 Red River College Student Evaluation Report, Graphic Design had the lowest overall score amongst all the Creative Arts programs. Graphic Design also scored the lowest for the "Instruction" category out of all the courses offered at the Princess St campus.
